Abstract

In this book, Alessandro Pierattini offers a comprehensive study of the evolution of pre-archaic Greek temple architecture from the eleventh to mid-seventh century BCE. Demystifying the formative stages of Greek architecture, he traces how temples were transformed from unassuming shrines made of perishable materials into large stone and terracotta monuments. Grounded in archaeological evidence, the volume analyzes the design, function, construction, and aesthetic of the Greek temple. While the book's primary focus is architectural, it also draws on non-architectural material culture, ancient cult practice, and social history, which also defined the context that fostered the Greek temple's initial development. In reconstituting this early history, Pierattini also draws attention to new developments as well as legacies from previous eras. Ultimately, he reveals why the temple's pre-Archaic development is not only of interest in itself, but also a key to the origins of the Greek monumental architecture of the Archaic period.

Abstract

The vibrant red sandstone temples of India's Deccan Plateau, such as the Pattadakal temple cluster, have attracted visitors since the eighth century or earlier. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the coronation place of the Chalukya dynasty, Pattadakal and its neighboring sites are of major historical importance. In Shiva's Waterfront Temples, Subhashini Kaligotla situates these buildings in the cosmopolitan milieu of Deccan India and considers how their makers and awestruck visitors would have seen them in their day. Kaligotla reconstructs how architects and builders approached the sites, including their use of ornamentation, responsiveness to courtly values such as pleasure and play, and ingenious juxtaposition of the first millennium's Nagara and Dravida aesthetics, a blend largely unique to Deccan plateau architecture. With over 130 color illustrations, this original book elucidates the Deccan's special place in the lexicon of medieval South Asian architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

"The present volume contains a total of eight articles which, in their thematic diversity, demonstrate the multiplicity of possible analyses to the Egyptian templeas an object of study. Among the different issues addressed, special attention is paid to the virtual reconstruction of certain areas of the temple of Karnak, aswell as to the accessibility of sorne of its spaces by ritualists and the population in general. The example of the site of Sikait, in the Eastern Desert, then allows for an analysis of the architecture of the different cult spaces of this important Romanmining centre. The study of the parietal inscriptions of the Graeco-Roman temples reveals the use of different theologies recreated through both texts andimages. In the New Kingdom, the decoration of the Theban temples on the West Bank allows us to explore aspects as diverse as the essential functionality ofsorne of the motifs represented, in the specific case of the so-called 1 historical reliefs' of Deir el-Bahari, and the observation of intertextual practices, whichsometimes even date back to testimonies from the Old Kingdom. Finally, the study of the priesthood of Memphis and the family lineages of its high priests duringthe Late Egyptian period brings us closer to the personnel responsible for the cultic and organisational tasks of the temple domains." -- Back cover.

Abstract

The first and by far largest part of this monograph is a complete translation of all the inscriptions of the great temple of Athribis including a short commentary. This part starts with an introduction into the different text categories. The second, analysing, part deals in six chapters with the theology of the temple. It treats first the pantheon of Athribis with the lion goddess Repit and Min on top, and deals further with the more than 100 different room and temple designations. Next come chapters dealing with the parallel texts and cult practice, and in the last chapter the reader finds all arguments in favour of the asumption that this temple is by far the largest remaining mammisi all over Egypt.

Abstract

It is generally accepted that Roman administrators, arriving in Egypt in the aftermath of Augustus' annexation of the province, confiscated en masse the land and other property belonging to the temples of Egypt--estimated at as much as one-third of the country. It is further accepted that this confiscation doomed the temples by removing their economic support and making them subservient to the Roman state, and that this in turn led to the collapse of Egyptian religion. In Confiscation or Coexistence: Egyptian Temples in the Age of Augustus, author Andrew Connor takes direct issue with both claims. The interpretative consensus developed after the publication of a handful of key documents--P.Tebt. 2.302 especially, alongside BGU 4.1198 and 1200, and P.Berl.Leihg. 1.5. Connor offers a fundamentally revised interpretation of these texts, building from a fresh examination of the papyri themselves. The book frames the interpretation in a wider discussion of Roman interactions with Egyptian religion, including material from inside and outside Egypt, and locates the development of an interpretative consensus in early 20th-century scholarship within the wider context of empire and colonization at the time. In doing so, Connor explores these papyri through their historical, intellectual, and linguistic contexts, alongside a number of other important texts bearing on the relationship between the temples and the Roman state.
